2026/05/12

Taipei, May 11, 2026 – On May 7, 2026, while anchored in the Gulf of Tonkin off northern Vietnam, the vigilant duty officer aboard Wan Hai Lines’ vessel WAN HAI 101 spotted several individuals waving for help from a floating object in the distance. Upon receiving the report, the captain immediately initiated search and rescue procedures. Within just 33 minutes of detection, the crew successfully rescued all four drifting survivors and promptly notified the Haiphong Vessel Traffic Service (VTS). Once safely aboard, the rescued individuals were accommodated in the ship’s rest area, provided with blankets, clean clothing, drinking water, and food. Crew members conducted initial medical checks and vital sign monitoring, confirming that while the survivors were physically weak, their overall health condition remained stable. In close coordination with Haiphong VTS and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC), a rescue vessel later arrived to complete the transfer of the survivors, bringing the mission to a successful conclusion. This rescue operation not only fulfills the vessel’s obligations under the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue, but also reflects Wan Hai Lines’ deep respect for the value of human life and commitment to humanitarian assistance.Wan Hai Lines will continue to uphold its mission — “We Carry, We Care” — supporting maritime safety and contributing to humanitarian efforts worldwide.
